Webber says it's a 'done deal'

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3219421

I wonder if he'll play CJ Watson HORSE for his number back?

I'll be cheering from the TV with a cold one.  12 years is a long time fellas, Cwebb is gonna be a Warrior again and I got to cheer all the Warriors on, even if half the Bay are haters.  I hope he rocks the black Air Max's like at Michigan.

"Beans"...will need some time...
Andris Biedrins, Nelson's incumbent center, took that to heart.

Even as Webber reportedly waited in the wings, Biedrins grabbed a career-high 26 rebounds to help the Warriors hold on for a 106-104 comeback win against the Knicks.

Chris who? "Of course, I take it a little bit personally, because it's my job," Biedrins said of all the talk about Webber, who will be signed by Tuesday, according to an ESPN.com report. "My job is defense and rebounds and blocked shots, so I'll try to do my job as good as I can."

Goodbye THUD
Gotta be a little bit nervous about this acquisition.  But, as many have attested, there's really nothing to lose here.  I think it is a good addition, just as long as he doesn't expect too many minutes.  Like the "another big man" idea, like that he can obviously pass...I think it's overall a good thing.
Pray for the guy

by B Randon on Jan 28, 2008 4:52 PM PST   0 recs

This should be fun
I'm really excited to see what he brings to the table at this point. I like the move for the simple fact that there was not much to lose and not much else available.

Aside from any actual basketball analysis, this should be a really fun story to follow. I can't wait to hear the interviews with Don and Chris after it is made official.

lol
it's fitting that he comes back to the bay of all places. we play a volatile style of game out there on the court, and the funny thing is we seem to be getting additions that fit that mold. first it was don nelson coming back after he had bad feelings towards cohan, and now chris webber comes back to be coached by the guy who made him leave in the first place. it's just funny and ironic to me that it's going down like this, so fitting for our team.

ESP TUTOR
Some confirmation courtesy the Chron:
He is set to begin working out with trainer Mark Grabow today in Oakland and will remain there while his new teammates complete their back-to-back set in Houston and New Orleans.

[...] Webber's debut is likely to come during a nationally televised game against Chicago on Feb. 7.

by leee on Jan 29, 2008 3:35 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

What a surprise
I just heard the Warriors are about to reacquire a controversial former player.

A guy whose passing skills and mid-range shooting ability work nicely in a half-court offense.

A guy who does not move too well.

A guy who isn't very good defensively.

A guy who tends to pout when things don't go his way.

A guy who was booed mercilessly when back in Oakland.

It's hard to believe that they are bringing back Mike Dunleavy. Sure hope it works out.

by dylantravis on Jan 28, 2008 5:10 PM PST   0 recs

i don't
think dunleavy was ever on a championship contending team.

by saintdee on Jan 28, 2008 5:11 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

That's true
It's not a perfect comparison, but I was struck by the surface similarities. Webber has been on multiple championship contending teams, including last year. And that team, his hometown team, a team more reliant on half-court offense than the Warriors, decided not to bring him back.

Assuming Mullin and Nelson are ready to cut him immediately if threatens team morale, I have no problem with taking a low-money, no players gamble to improve the team's depth and half-court offense. I just doubt that Webber has much to offer at this point.

But it sure makes an already interesting team even more fascinating.

by dylantravis on Jan 28, 2008 5:39 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

detroit
It's not clear to me that Detroit didn't try to bring him back, but they certainly didn't want to increase his role there.  He was a part-time center for them for part of a season.

by jae on Jan 29, 2008 5:49 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

No room for Webber
I had heard that the Pistons didn't want to cut one of their 15-man roster players in order to make room for the one-legged wonder.

BTW, is Brian Sabean now the general manager of the Warriors?  Wasn't Steve Finley available?

One leg is a lot more than what THud can offer at this point.

We've definitley entered the Twighlight Zone...
This kind of thing doesn't happen in a world where normal rules apply...

But if any team can actually flourish in some parallel universe where the Don and C-Webb somehow unite... it has to be this wonderfully odd team that Mullin has assembled.

I'm not as mad now that they've locked up Watson. I'm not very happy though, truth be told. I don't think he's gonna do anything for us.

Id like the TPE and/or pietrus to be dealt now please. If you're going to deepen our bench, don't stop now.

Back in May 2007....
...after we got eliminated by Utah, I remember telling myself that we're one PF who can rebound away from the WC Finals (and maybe more...)

Is C-Webb that one PF to get us over the hump ? Let's give him 10-15 games to see what he's got, and then let's judge whether this signing was worth it.

by All About The W on Jan 28, 2008 5:23 PM PST   0 recs

i think the only
way Webb wouldn't be worth it is if he justs stands on the court and does nothing.. i mean we are the team that pays millions to POB,KOSTA and Beli for standing around...we basically have our own cheering section.

by saintdee on Jan 28, 2008 5:24 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

He's not worth it
if he stinks and takes away minutes from Biedrens and Harrington.

by San Francisco Slim on Jan 29, 2008 10:08 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

its something in the air or water
Oakland is a special place. Love'em or hate'm (i love'em) the Raiders coming back was unprecedented. that never happens. except in Oakland. Rickey came back to the A's three times, I think. This is just how things are supposed to work in the "town"

If we temper our expectations, we can't lose. to the doubters... there's no way mullin/nelson bring in webber without kicking the tires. i believe nelson is honest when he speaks of (both of them) maturing for the better.

I'm pumped for friday. J-Rich, Nelson, Mullin, Webber.

Who would've believed this tale in 2000?

" Sleepy Floyd is Superman!!!"

by CoachBarry on Jan 28, 2008 5:52 PM PST   0 recs

yea seriously
Oakland is like a sports "sanctuary" where old beefs and old players come to revive thier careers...

I bet tickets are gonna be crazy for that JRich, and CWebb welcome back game!

by RubberDubDubs on Jan 28, 2008 8:20 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

SWEET!!!
havent been this excited for awhile.  hope he plays this friday.

C-Webb
im pumped...

chemistry-baron and stack jack will let webb know if he needs to cool down or anything like that. Baron is good like that.

on the court-whats not to like, give him like a month to get back in shape and he'll be hella good (enough at what he's gotta do) by the time the playoffs roll around.

checkbook-minimum wage...sounds good

what does this say about our bigs
if nelly thinks this guy

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/nba/sixers/2008-01-21-obrien-webber_N.htm
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080123/COL22/801230389/1051
(also check out the detroit boards or do searches on him w/ the words whiner, crybaby, etc)

is better than the guys on our bench. pob & kosta must be worse than alton lister or big vic in practice if nelly isn't willing to play either.

low cost? in some ways this is true, he's likely not going to affect the win/loss total much (PAWS/min & Roland Rating are both negative despite spending most of his time on the court w/ chauncy, rip, tayshaun, and sheed).

BUT it's probably gonna cost andris and al playing time and they're the two starters who you could argue already aren't playing enough minutes. no way he's happy w/ 10-15 minutes. and it's already guaranteed that belinelli, kosta & wright aren't even going to get garbage time seeing as how none of them will be on the active list once croshere is back.

yeah kosta/pob are gonna miss assignments, but at least they care and try. cwebb is a quitter who is both mentally & physically soft - yet has the gall to whine about minutes and not getting the ball enough on a pistons team loaded w/ talent.

another concern i have is that cwebb's not going to be taking away baron & sjax's touches... he's going to take monta, al & andris' - 3 of the team's best % shooters.

if nellie wanted a freakin big who could pass and back up biedrins, he should of drafted f'in NOAH. yeah his ceiling may be in the varejao range plus passing ability, but varejao is a good BACK UP big man who has been crucial to the cavs recent success.

by the evil monkey on Jan 28, 2008 7:20 PM PST   0 recs

minutes
Some of the minutes will come from Biedrins and probably Harrington as Nellie goes small, but there's a possibility that some of those minutes come from Jackson, Barnes and Pietrus.  One thing that this move does is allow the Warriors to play a touch of a more "traditional" lineup where they aren't using a 2/3 type as the nominal PF.  In other cities, Nellie hasn't been so ridiculously overreliant on a small-ball lineup.  He's been happy to play big men (albeit up-tempo bigs who can pass and shoot) when he's had them.

I hope this does spell some relief for Jax. Jackson needs a rest.  Between the hurt toe and 40mpg, he's visibly wearing down. His defense seems a bit off and he's not able to provide 40 intense minutes anymore.

by jae on Jan 29, 2008 5:55 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Warrior rotation
The Warriors rotation has already changed somewhat. Pietrus appears to be out of the rotation.  Azubuike is playing about half of the minutes he was earlier in the season.

However, if Webber takes some of Barnes and Jackson's minutes, that could be a good thing. Neither one of those guys is a consistent offensive player and C-Webb can duplicate some of the things they do on offense.

The problem is that Webber can't guard Nellie at this point, so he'll likely only be able to guard centers. Maybe Biedrins and Harrington can guard PFs when Webber is in there, but it will be a challenge to come up with a defensive rotation, as if it already isn't.

by San Francisco Slim on Jan 29, 2008 10:49 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Can't
"can't guard Nellie at this point"

Well I know he's out of shape and all, but I'm pretty sure CWebb could still shut down Nellie... =P

by allonyou on Jan 29, 2008 1:42 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Well,
At least we only have him for a few months. Isn't his M.O. to fit in well, in the beginning, then wear out his welcome wherever he goes?  At best, he could be that missing PF that can solidify our playoff spot. At worst, he's ineffective, pouts, and we cut him. Should be interesting!

by geemoney650 on Jan 28, 2008 8:25 PM PST   0 recs

how I think it affects Biedrins
I think this is a good thing for Biedrins, playing time aside.

Throughout his young career, it seems he's never been deterred by challenges or criticism.  Sure it affects him, but usually in a positive way.

Nelson doesn't like to play players who don't shoot and don't pass well?  Biedrins plays so well that Nelson has to play him, regardless.

Nelson puts Biedrins on the bench?  Biedrins gives at least the same level of effort and production no matter what, if he gets the starting nod or not.

Nelson says they're not a good enough team to make the playoffs as they are?  Biedrins responds and puts up an NBA season high 26 rodmans.

Nelson and Mullin bring in a legit, proven center onto the squad?  There's actually now a reason sitting on the bench that Biedrins could get the hook for mistakes now, something that wasn't there before.  But I think Biedrins is going to respond in a good way.

by jlagace on Jan 29, 2008 6:43 AM PST   0 recs

Do we now go get Sprewell?
Looks like we are getting the old guys do we now get Sprewell ?

I like the way Webber passes, loved watching him with Kings, I think he will be good. Everyone in the media is now talking about the Warriors, maybe it will bring more attention to the team.

Who knows what the Coach and GM are thinking.

by RubberDubDubs on Jan 29, 2008 1:46 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

The more I really think about it
the more I warm up to this signing.  My initial thought was "Hell no. Not $%@#ing Webber!"  But I'm starting to warm up to this.  Troy Hudson wasn't playing or helping us in any form anyways, so we're not missing much by getting rid of him.  Croshere has been injured more than not, though I think he's played pretty decent when he wasn't hurt and given a chance.  So now we have another "big" that Nellie will play so that means less time for french trainwreck at the PF spot and less WTF moments from him.  Hopefully no more playtime for Pietrus at all or he's dealt soon.

What I'm most interested is how Webber can help the team when the opponent decides to zone up.  Instead of jacking up 3's until they go in when playing against the zone, we got a forward/center that can pass pretty well in the high post to cutters, play the pick and roll or pick and pop.

I don't know how much he's actually going to help.  But it's not the horrible signing that I initially thought it was.

by nautica on Jan 29, 2008 2:08 PM PST   0 recs

seeds of move planted long ago
J Hu reports that orchestrating Webber's return began in training camp:
Coach Don Nelson said that's when he first asked forward Matt Barnes to send out a feeler to Webber, his close friend and two-time teammate, about playing for Nelson again.

Then Mullin, Baron, Jax all started calling him ...
