RECAP: Warriors 111, Spurs 102

I...I'm speechless. Is this for real? Am I dreaming? If I'm dreaming please, please don't wake me up. First we beat Utah, the team with the best record in the league and now we beat the Spurs, the team with the second best record in the league? Oh my.

The Warriors weren't supposed to win this one either. No Baron, no Pietrus, and no Diogu? Now they've won twice without those guys against the best teams in the league. They really epitomize what it means to be a team. Everyone is stepping up right now to cover for the injured guys. Good teams pick up for each other and that's exactly what's going on here. If you're not excited about the Warriors after this win, please go get your pulse checked. This team is legit and should finally get some respect from the national media. You don't knock off the top two teams in consecutive games and not get some recognition.

With these two major wins, this could be a serious turning point in the season. Instead of doing what many expected and losing the two games and winding up 7-8, the Warriors defied most people and are now 9-6. Mark it down on your calendars, November 27, 2006, is the day the Warriors turned the page on mediocrity and moved on to playoff basketball.

Now, to the game...

The first half was awesome. The Warriors were down early, hung tough and took the lead, only to have the Spurs tie the game at the half. The Warriors proved to everyone in the Oracle Arena that they could hang with this team and keep this game close. You could tell none of the players were intimidated by the mighty Spurs.

The first half was highlighted by JRich who shot 8-13 from the field to really keep the Warriors in the game. It seemed like he was hitting everything, layups, mid-range jumpers, three pointers, his stroke was there in the first half.

Smooth operator, smoooooooth operatooooor (you have to know the song)

The surprise of the first half was the solid play of Keith McLeod. In previous games, I felt he didn't contribute much to the team, but tonight with Monta struggling from the get go, McLeod really stepped it up. He was all over the place on defense and ran the offense efficiently. Without his first half contribution, the Warriors might have been down 10 instead of tied.

But this game was all about the 2nd half...

Dunleavy got a weird reaction from the crowd
They gave him a nice ovation when he went to sit down for a rest. That hasn't happened in a very very long time. Usually he gets booed, but tonight he really stepped up his game and I'm glad the crowd acknowledged his fine play. Stuck with only 3 points in the first half and not really making an impact, Dunleavy came out strong in the 2nd half. He scored 17 points and keyed a 13-0 run with some nice hustle plays, a couple layups, and a big 3 ball. There were numerous times where he was on the floor scrambling for a loose ball or pulling down a rebound in traffic. He finished the night with 20 points, 5 boards, 4 assists, and 4 steals. One of those steals was quite memorable as he came from the backside of Duncan and just poked the ball away igniting a fast break. He's had his ups and downs, but if he continues to hustle and knock down shots like he did tonight, this team will be much better off. Let's hope the crowd lays off the boos for awhile after having such a great night.

On a side note, I really wanted to put a picture of Dunleavy and some hustle play or a 3 point shot, but there are no AP or ESPN photos of him. Next time.

Matt Barnes, hustler extraordinaire
So, um, how was this guy an unwanted free agent? My goodness, I love what he brings to the team. He did it all tonight. He had 13 points, 7 boards, 6 assists, and lots of hustle. His D was solid, he hit some nice shots, and was able to contribute by spreading the ball around and hitting cutters for some nice layups.

Monta!
You know what? I don't want to forget his horrible first 3 quarters where he had just 5 points, numerous turnovers and missed shots. You know why? He came back in the 4th quarter unfazed, dropped 14 points, knocked down clutch free throws, and handled the ball in the final 2 minutes to seal the win. What did we learn about Monta after this game? He's able to forget the past and keep moving forward. Big time players are able to do that and Monta is quickly becoming one. Tonight he didn't let his poor play in the first 3 quarters get him down. He knew the team needed him to step up in the 4th and that's exactly what he did. Now, where can I go get a Monta jersey?

Came up big in the 4th

Beans, Beans, he makes you...
He makes me sit in my seat and marvel at how much he's improved. I love watching him play now. He matched Duncan tonight in the boxscore, but more importantly, he held his own down low against the All-Star. During that 13-0 run in the 4th, Biedrins was able fend off Duncan who touched the ball every single time down the court. His defense during that period was nothing short of amazing. He blocked Duncan a couple times, changed some shots with help defense, and was able to stay away from the fouls. His line of 18 points, 15 boards, 4 assists (!) and 6 blocks, really says it all. He did everything tonight especially when it counted the most.

Mr. Biedrins' neighborhood

What Achilles heel?
Free throws. Free throws. Free throws. You need to knock them down in the 4th quarter in order to win against good teams. So all the Warriors did was make 13 of 14 free throws in the 4th and 20-24 overall. They sealed the victory tonight FROM THE LINE. Biedrins hit 2 big ones and is now 9-11 from the line in his last 3 games. This shooting doctor seems to really be paying off for AB.

Warrior Wonder: I had such a hard time deciding on who deserved this award. It could go to Mike Dunleavy for his hustle, scoring contribution, and just doing the small things to help the team win. Or it could go to Monta Ellis for his clutch play down the stretch, despite struggling the first 3 quarters. But I really have to give the award to Andris Biedrins for shutting down the middle during the Warriors 13-0 run and stellar play against one of the league's best post players.

As always, leave your thoughts and observations in the comments section.

Now go vote for your Warrior Wonder

*NOTE: JRich was interviewed after the game and said his knee is about 80% right now. So he's still probably a few weeks away from being 100%.

Biedrins
Is in the top 10 centers in the league.  He's already better than Brad Miller.  He deserves to be a reserve in the all-star game.

Keith
I voted for McCloud because we expect J-Rich, Monta and Biedrins to perform the way they did, but Keith had some clutch steals and scores.

a couple weeks ago
anyone who predicted what Beedy is doing would've been laughed out of the gym, and now - "it's expected" ... he will still have ups and downs, so will this whole team (it's gonna be a roller coaster ride - remember two weeks ago?) but, wow Biedrin's been the difference maker as far as I'm concerned - at the most critical position, most critical, he's come through HUGE

Agree
I totally agree with you. We know what to expect from AB, Monta, Jrich, Matt Barnes, they all played the way we want them and expect them to play. Mcleod however... has been SUCKING until last night when he forced key turnovers in the first half that totally kept the warriors in the game. Warrior wonder for that game is Mcleod.

how about #3
If you go by the fantasy sports performance index  on nba.com, Biedrins (who is listed as a forward not center), comes in 3rd place behind Yao and Duncan for all players at the center position this season. He is even ahead of D Howard. So statistically, anyway, Biedrins is the 3rd best center in the Association so far this season.

It's Biedrins
Duh. Anyone who can own Duncans Donuts deserves it. I got a huge rookie 7 foot tall poster of him at a book fair the the year before I started liking the Warriors. Its still on my wall. :/

Not only for his fabulous coaching, but because he got his California driver's license today and missed only ONE question on the written exam.

Let's not name names.
They all shut it down tonight. They all deserve equal props. Even Dunleavy. Man has me seriously thinking about picking him up in a fantasy league. As a reserve. lol.

It's great to be a Warriors Fan
Guys, we've all been sticking it through with our Fav Dubs all these years and we've always truly appreciated each and every win and savored every great moment. I'm damn proud to be seeing this fantastic change in the team. They keep this up and it'll be "through ThinNThinN?" no more.

I'm no you know who, but nonetheless, i'm glad that Dun is getting some props for his steller play. He was seriously working out there; overplaying on D, Diving for loose balls, asserting himself on offense.

It's great to see how in these pass two games, you see a different warrior step it up when we needed it. It seems like pretty much roberson is the only one that has yet to have a big quarter.

This is JRich at 80%? I can't wait to see him a a hundo. Got a dream chance to chop it up with him at a SF club after the Jazz game, and he said the knee is feeling real good, not showing signs of sweeling or fluid build up.

So i had tickets to this spurs game, was suppose to see it in person, but on the way home i was involved in a three car accident on 237 east. Got hit by a truck that was hit by a SUV. Very sad i couldn't use my tix, but rushed home in time to catch the game in HD.

Happy Hollidays Dub Nation.

Yeah, i'm glad everyone was ok. Honestly, the whole time i was just wondering how imma see the warriors game, or if i'd have to just listen to it on the radio. The webpin was suppose to be a relative joke, but i'm a bit afraid i'm starting to turn into it.

Yup...all equal props
Dunleavy had some definite hustle plays. I was impressed. Is it me, or are AB and Monta reincarnated or what? These guys were on our team last year?  And Matt B....that is a man playing with confidence...you can see it when he gets the ball. Wait til they play in the the retro "the city" uniforms.

Idn't great
... to have a competitive team to root for again?

You know what's funny: with the way the offense runs under Nellie, I'd rather keep Dunleavy than Murphy or Ike.

Although, behind B'Drins, I can't imagine anyone else really stepping up to play center.  I dunno.....

WHAT A FUN GAME TO BE AT!!!! monta showed what he is made of in crunch time and nice to see j-rich exploding on the rim and making shots, but andris da GIANT gets my vote tonight for going toe to toe with tim duncan like it was no big deal, like he was the grissly old vet with a couple of mvp's under his belt!!!! gotta love ANDRIS DA GIANT!!!!!

What a win!
Can someone please explain to me why we play so well against the great teams, but fail against the teams we should be hands down!?!?!

I love the win however, what happens when we play Indy or the BUCKS?? I'm hoping this is a great turnaround for us. I'm still in shock.

by YaoButtaMing on Nov 28, 2006 8:01 AM PST   0 recs

It's All Mental
Great question. The GSW have done this for several seasons. It's a mental thing. That's it.

They just have to learn to play consistently and win the "easy" games if they want to be a true contender.

They are aware of it. You know Nellie is aware of it, but in an interview BD also brought it up. It will improve.

by pineriver on Nov 28, 2006 6:54 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Well I really think that Dun deserves this one.
Beans has been coming on to his own but w/o Dunleavy's hustle (that one steal from the baseline where he fell back to save the ball from out of bounds was the epitome of hustle... along with Barnes steal with the between the legs save going out of bounds =) we wouldn't have caught them in the third... The Spurs started both halves strong... we just fought them off like true Warriors (pun intended).  Did anyone notice the horrible officiating.  There was some iffy calls in the PHX game (which we should have won... i guess refs love the Suns) and now in this game.  Why does it have to be against the W's though... it's not like we need those teams need the handicap against us... OR MAYBE THEY DO!!! Of course... it all makes sense now!  The league is trying to stop our playoff hopes.  They handed PHX the win last week and tried to give this one to the Spurs... Good job Nelson!  You beat the system.

by mightymadskillz on Nov 28, 2006 8:08 AM PST   0 recs

don't know how you will fell about this one...
How about Keith McCloud? Granted, it was Monta's turn down the stretch, but how about him comin in when Monta was REALLY strugglin, and running the show? His defense was great, he drove to the hoop, and had some passes too! I would love to see him grow and get better in case Baron is hurt and Monta isn't playin too well. Props to him for keepin his head up on the bench, and takin the opportunity when it came!
Big Tone

Excellent!!
Wow, just a great game. Props to the whole team. Players stepping up to carry the team at critical times while others struggled, this is what makes a winner. Can't believe this is the same team that lost to the Lakers!  Hustle on loose balls and defense and clutch freethrows!! What more could we want!!!

by Skeptic con Urquell on Nov 28, 2006 8:22 AM PST   0 recs

Monta showed me somthing last night.
He had me pulling out my hair for 3 quarters, but he really turned it on in the 4th. I'm not excusing his poor performance, but it really shows something about the kid for him to bounce back like that and ice the game with clutch shooting from the field and from the FT line.

I'm glad he turned it around, because he would have been the one to blame had they lost. On a night when the rest of the team played great, Monta was the one keeping the Spurs in the game. Hopefully he will learn from that experience. It may have been the first time he was trying to guard someone as fast as he is. Parker had a great night, and I'm really surprised that the Spurs went away from the high pick and roll that was killing the Warriors all night. I guess when you have Duncan you have to go to him in crunch time.

by chrisz42 on Nov 28, 2006 8:45 AM PST   0 recs

We're Deep Now
Despite Murphy taking a step backwards and the injuries to Ike and Davis, the Warriors are a lot deeper now. Offense can come from any player on the floor. It's even coming from the center position now. The change from Foyle to Biedrins 2.0 is astounding. Biedrins not only catches passes and lays the ball in, but now he has a few offensive moves. Where did this come from!!!??? He must have really worked hard over the summer. Do you guys think Biedrins is now the most important Warrior? I'm not saying he's the most talented, but I do think he's the most important to our winning games. I can't imagine the Dubs winning without his defense on the floor.

by showerman on Nov 28, 2006 8:46 AM PST   0 recs

Best Game in Last 4 Years
The win was huge.  It was against a top team when the game meant something to both teams and it shows the promise for the future.

Biedrins' defense on Duncan in the 4th was awesome.  He got a couple of blocks and rebounded in traffic.  Making 2 clutch FTs was also nice to see.  It looks like he will have it all now with his hands and ability to finish coupled with FTs.

Monta was aggressive late in the 4th and knocked down the FTs.  That's what a go to player does to seal a victory.

Dunleavy was playing in the flow, his 3 in transition was perfect.  He did a little of everything.

Love Barnes.  Hustle, size and defense with some confident offense thrown in.

Nothing better than "The City".

GIANT KILLAS!
i love, love the fact that andris isn't scared of anything.  he and monta show so much maturity the way they shake off stumbles or rejections and just get back to work.  so far monta seems to learn from every mistake rather than get flustered and andris just plain plays his big wierd looking heart out.

this is all nelson's work.  the constant massaging and tweaking of the line up is a pleasure to watch.  the warriors are finally flowing!

no excuses for the other teams on the last two wins, we shut them down!

woowee!!!
whatagame!!!
I think it goes to Biedrins or Dunleavy.  Biedrins because not only did he have a fantastic game, but he really played stellar defense on one of the best big men in the league, and really turned on the D in the 4th quarter.  And Dunleavy because you have to respect a player who is team captain, raved about by the coach in preseason, etc. and still finds himself starting on the bench despite many injuries, yet is able to play with as much heart as he did, and as well as he did.

props to the warriors!

glad to hear you're ok, k759

Fun Game
This is the one we've been waiting for: when all the pieces come together at just the right time.  Everyone played well -- and better when it counted.  AB is just in a zone.  Monta had that "climb on my back" 4th quarter.  JR was the guy keeping them in the game in the first half, with that nice exclamation point at the end.  Barnes was solid throughout -- at both ends.  Dunleavy played to his potential in the second half -- and his strong plays (e.g. the Oberto strip, followed by that re-positioning as he went out of bounds allowing him to direct the ball for a fast break, which he ended up closing by draining the three; the steal from behind on Duncan; the defensive rebound in a crowd when the Spurs threatened near the end; his overall hustle, etc.) came at just the right time.

Now, three observations:

  • If Dunleavy can keep this "sixth man" game up -- at least as to his energy level and hustle -- this team can be quite good, because the starters are beginning to jell.  (JR has to get the hops back, tho, and we'll need Baron for 50-60 games, but I think AB and Monta can be said to have arrived at this point -- yet, what's up with MP, and whoever heard of a weeklong "stomach flu"?.)
  • The two key stats for me last night were: (1) 13-14 on free throws in the 4th Q  (I know, I know, Dun had the only miss, but this kind of shooting is the difference between winning and losing games -- and teams); (2) six guys had at least three assists -- and five guys had at least four -- reflecting the selfless TEAM game they are playing.
  • Nellie's feel for the game, and his ability to bring the TEAM along (and major props to BD for getting on board), have not only made these guys think they can win, it's made them fun to watch.  Perhaps the best example of this was that, after killing Utah with the 1-2-2 zone, Nellie had the guys playing mostly man last night -- and his three bigs (AB, Dun and Barnes) each did his part (AB, particularly) such that there were no double and triple teams needed on Duncan, and the Spurs other bigs were pretty much kept out of the key.  Now THAT's coaching.
Let's savor this, but let's also hope the guys can keep it going tomorrow night.  They've shown what they CAN do; now they have to do it consistently.

Dun
Thanks for pointing out to us (AGAIN) that the warriors can be "quite good" thanks to Dun. Broken record.

by gsdubz on Nov 29, 2006 12:17 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Broken record?
Just because a number of people are saying it -- Nellie (even thru his healthy, tough-love approach included) -- hardly makes it a "broken record."  If you failed (or simply refuse) to see how Dun's play was a difference maker in the Spurs game -- or, put another way, if you can see how the W's would have won that game without Dun playing like he did -- then I surmise further repetition remains necessary.

Good thing others -- like Nellie, Mully, JRich and even Tim K, yesterday -- are able to keep noting that when Dun hustles like he did Monday he brings things to the table that no one else does.  Which is why he can be such an effective sixth man.  And a team on the rise NEEDS a multi-talented guy who can come off the bench and make some heady plays, like Mike did against the Spurs.  Sorry you apparently disagree.

(BTW, if you go back and READ my post you'll note that I mentioned a few OTHER things the W's still need to be "quite good" -- including having BD on the floor for 50-60 games this season, getting JRich back to his ol' 2005 self, continuing the selfless team play concept that maximizes everyone's performance, etc.  I wasn't just talking about Dun, but you can't deny the fact that he played a terrific role in that big team victory -- or can you?)

by johnl on Nov 29, 2006 9:47 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

Doing what he's paid for?
"if you can see how the W's would have won that game without Dun playing like he did -- then I surmise further repetition remains necessary."
If we didn't have Dun I'm sure we could find someone more consistent for the money so yes I can see us winning without him.
Maybe the solution would be to fire Mullin then let his replacement trade Dun?

Quickies
Big ups
  • Great team defense by everyone. The rotations were excellent for most of the game. Nice work by an undermanned squad.
  • Nellie is DA Man. No other way to say it. He has these guys playing out of their mind and he has everyone's respect. Coach Nelson is hiding everyone's faults and putting them in a position to shine.
  • The Warriors hit their free throws. I'll say it again: The Warriors hit their free throws! This might be the only time this season where they shot at a significantly better at clip from the charity stripe (83.3%), than from downtown (52.9%). I couldn't believe it.
  • Creating turnovers- 10 steals and 11 blocks-- I luv it! Very active fast break basketball. I luv playing that way and it's a joy to watch.
  • Andris the Giant: Sure his game last night wasn't nearly as pretty or fundamental as Tim never Dunkin, but it was every bit effective. That in itself is amazing. I don't have to tell you how good Duncan is, but for Andris to pretty much negate him is remarkable.
  • Matt Barnes: Very nice all around game. I never knew he could pass like that. 13 points, 7 boards, 6 assists, 3 blocks, and 1 steal- like Fantasy Junkie said- how could this guy be a training camp tryout? He's been a gift from the basketball gods.
  • JRich: Nice shooting night. Very active defense too. On the telecast Barnett kept calling for a screen on Bowen to free up Jason. I agree. He was hitting his shots and if he got some screens he would've hit 32+ points. It's a win, so I doubt Jason or anyone else cares.
  • Dunleavy: Great all around game. Coming off 2 poor outings, I didn't expect much especially against Brent Barry, but he stepped up big time.
  • Monta playing like a veteran and shaking off those 1st 3 quarters in which he struggled to come up BIG in the 4th.
  • Keith ballin in the clouds- Great defense. McLeod held down the forth when Monta was struggling.
  • It'll be lost in the win, but Troy Murphy pitched in a very nice 18 minutes of play. I'm guessing the only reason Nellie elected to play him so little was style of play.
Negatives
* Are you kidding? Aside from Monta's 4 turnovers what is there to dock this team for? To put it simply: Last night's W was crazy phat stoopid!

Warrior Wonder
NELLIE.

HOLLA!

More on Nellie
Nelson's impact is simply striking
The saga of Dunleavy, meanwhile, remains a story of twists and turns. At times the crowd's booing and heckling seems unreasonable, especially in light of Dunleavy's intriguing stat line Monday night. Nelson, though, isn't annoyed by the love-hate relationship. On a night when he downplayed a very big win, citing the Spurs' back-to-back games and the absence of Ginobili, Nelson took a hard stance on Dunleavy.

"A lot of it is his own fault," said Nelson. "He needs to step up and do more, get tougher. I mean, I have the same problem the fans do. I'm not booing (laughter), but I'm thinking that way. Like, if he's got a mismatch down low, he might not do anything about it -- that sort of thing. I'm on him a lot, because he's our team captain, and there are times when he needs to be dominant."

This isn't just about Dunleavy- the important point here is that Nellie holds EVERYONE accountable. The players weren't held accountable last season and it showed. Nellie knows how to light a fire under everyone. Excellent motivator.

That's all the fans have ever wanted from Dun
(and all I've ever wanted is for him to stop being a fantasy tease, everytime I've picked him up he's promptly tanked!). Last night he came thru bigtime, if he can maintain that hustle and  attitude then the booing will stop.

stomach flu
is killer. I got it early this year. It kind of incubates in your system for 2-3 days before it really hits you. Once it hits you for real, it takes about 3 days to just get back to anything remotely normal; meaning you can start to eat mostly solid foods again. First day, you can barely even drink water. But the other big thing is, you are highly contageous for quite a few days after you get better, so it's probably a good thing that he is staying away. I didn't see him on the bench at the Jazz game, and dont think he was on the bench for the spurs game eaither. We dont whant the entire team getting the Stomach flu.

BTW, thanks to the GSoM Community for sentiments. I appreciate it.

I had the stomach flu
before.  And it was easily the worst week of my entire life.  Took me a week to get back to normal.  Even when you're healed, you're drained of energy for awhile.

Good to know
Thanks for the info.  I've had the stomach flu a few times, and it's ALWAYS been a 24-36 hour thing; horrible and incredibly painful and enervating for that period, but then it's almost as if a cloud has lifted and I'm back to normal -- tho a bit weaker, since I've been drained of fluids.  This has also been true for my wife and daughter and many of my colleagues at work.  But it looks like there may be several types, since a number of people have had much longer bouts.  I guess that's where MP is.  Too bad.

To be candid, my concern was highlighted by the fact historically MP has been a real slow healer, and he's had more than his share of nicks and bruises.

so basically..
Pietrus just isn't really that good, (this post is an effort to downplay the person who took Dunleavy's starting spot), in an effort to help the BIG picture of johni's posts to glorify Dunleavy.  Nice approach.

2 weeks ...
I had some version of the stomach flu punctuated by two weeks of what Dave Chappelle would describe as "mudd butt." It was bad but it let me indulge in gatorade for the time being (my secret pleasure). I feel for Pietrus... hope he gets better soon.

What are the S.A. papers saying?
It's always fun to see what the oppositions newspapers write after a loss- they give much props to Andris

SA paper
"It's always fun to see what the oppositions newspapers write after a loss"
Thanks for the link, that's a very fair assesment of the game, interesting to read what Duncan thought about the game.

Hey Charles!
I'd like to hear what Charles Barkley has to say. I still remember his comments after the GSW looked great and beat the Kings on TNT. He was saying just wait until the GSW face a real team like the Spurs. Then he went on and on about his team, the Hawks.

Charles? Charles?

yup
send a big plate of crow to mr. barkley. i know what his response would be: "well it was early in the season, and the spurs don't care about november, they care about april." bull you-know-what. the spurs were 11-3 and 7-0 on the road, don't tell me they didn't care.
